Allocentrism is behavior or a form of thought and attitude characterized as obsessive.

Popularized definitions of that term exist and tend to give it an aspect less connoted with a sense of dedication for the collective interest.

Etymology

This word is formed from two Latin words:

  • "allos": other, dissimilar, is often opposed to 'homo' or 'homeo' (similar);
  • "centrum": (centre, centric, centrism); in psychiatry, in link with the centre.

Definition

Tendency to put the others in the centre of his own universe, concerns and interests, and to focus his own activities in relation to what someone else does with an obsessive tendency.

An allocentric person thinks and acts by prioritizing the group's interests first before his own objectives. Thus, Chinese civilization and culture would be more allocentric than the Western civilization and culture. It would be a kind of primary communism at the individual level.

Allocentrism refers to the creation of an affective or emotional dependency of a person towards one or several other people, because of a need for an identity recognition - the self in the group <=> the group in the self.

Allocentrism is the opposite of self-centeredness that tends to prioritize personal thoughts and activities on oneself.

Allocentric: adjective which characterizes an allocentric individual. The allocentric individual is more interested in others than himself.

Allocentrism is not associated with the attitude of otherness; in the way that allocentrism is more stubbornness and obstinacy rather than a respectful approach for others.
