An "alternative" is composed of two elements, offering thus two different options, two different choices. In the vocabulary of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), it means that there is another way or another possibility. However, it is relevant to indicate that it can be understood that there is an alternative for conflict resolution, i.e. that there are two possible ways.

Two main ways of reflection can be identified to consider conflict resolution:

  • 1. - The first way is provided by a very developed reflection. It can be found in the frame of confrontations, power struggles, arbitrations by a judge within the judicial system and representation by lawyers, adversarial models, wars, eristic approach from Arthur Schopenhauer or approaches of commercial negotiation applied to disputes (see reasoned negotiation): Reflection within adversity ®.
  • 2. - The second way is proposed by an emerging reflection, which can be found in the research of easing, the concept of the least possible loser in conflict resolution, recognition, mediation approach, whatever the trains of thoughts, may it be ideological (spiritual, legal, Western psychology...), or both philosophical and scientific (see Jean-Louis Lascoux): Reflection within otherness ®.

Thus a definition of 'alternative' within conflict resolution has been described by highlighting the two possible ways of reflection that can be explored.
