In 1834 a group of tradesmen set up the “Associaçao Mercantil Lisbonense” (Lisbon Mercantile Association) which in February 1855 was to become the “Associaçao Comercial de Lisboa” (Lisbon Trade Association). Its present name was only to be defined at a later date, in 1903, when the Association won the statute of Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The spirit of the 277 businessmen who, on 12th June 1834, established the first provisory regulations for the Lisbon Mercantile Association continues to live on in the current statutes of the Lisbon Trade Association / Portuguese Chamber of Commerce. At the forefront of the movement of business associations in the country, the Lisbon Mercantile Association was the first economic corporation in Portugal.

In its first statutes approved on 28th December 1834 it was clearly stated that the objective was to promote everything judged to be useful to Portuguese Commerce and which might increase the prosperity of the country (?), without involving any political or religious stances.
