Contributive negotiation targets a sustainable agreement. It considers the success of each party as a condition for the success of the agreement. Contributive negotiation is part of the practices associated with the Reflection within otherness ®.

Contributive negotiation appeals to the conscience for a sustainable and qualitative relationship. It is not based on the win-win approach for material interests. This type of negotiation enables each party to take into account the need for recognition and as well as the fragility of an agreement adopted in a situation of crisis.

  • "I do not negotiate with myself, I deliberate";
  • "I do not negotiate with my spouse, I dialogue";
  • "I do not negotiate with my child, I educate";

The parties shall consider that, if they expect to maintain a good quality relationship, each must be attentive that none of them might succeed at the expense of the other.

In some agreements, the "contribution" may consist of just stopping harmful behaviours.

In the agreements aiming long-term and sustainable relationships, the contribution can go further and anticipate what might facilitate and even promote the success of the other party.

The contributive negotiation is practised in contexts of conflict resolutions, accompanied by professional mediators who enable parties to consider the future. These mediators recommend as well introduce the mediation clause in the written mediation agreements that become therefore new private contracts.

The contributive negotiation process goes from the establishment of a climate of trust, through the recognition of the legitimacy of the various and different positions and viewpoints as well as through the identification of the practical aspects of an agreement, up to the definition of the implementation modalities and durability of the contract.
