The King County Dispute Resolution Center (DRC) has provided mediation services, training, and informational presentations to people who live or work in King County, Washington State, since 1987. Approved to operate under the auspices of RCW (Revised Code of Washington) 7.75, the DRC is a non-profit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt corporation, governed by a Board of Directors drawn from the community.

Most of the DRC's mediation services are provided by approximately 160 volunteers, who each year work about 3,600 cases, consisting of mediations and problem-solving and informational calls with individual clients. Eight staff members provide professional supervision, training, outreach, and administrative support.

The DRC's annual operating budget is approximately $260,000. The DRC is funded by King County, the City of Seattle, foundations, and by the generous (tax deductible) contributions of individuals and corporations in the community.

[edit] Mission Statement and Guiding Principles

The King County Dispute Resolution Center (DRC) is a non-profit community organization. Its mission is to increase the use of mediation and peaceful conflict resolution skills in our communities.

The DRC pursues its mission by providing conflict resolution services, skill training, volunteer participation, and educational presentations.

Through all of its activities, the DRC operates under the following Guiding Principles:

  • Conflict as Opportunity. DRC views conflict as natural, inevitable, and a potential source of positive transformations.
  • Respect for the Individual. DRC affirms the worth of each individual, supporting their good faith and creative efforts to resolve conflicts in their lives.
  • Community Empowerment. DRC relies on trained volunteers to be the primary providers of our peace-making activities.
  • Self-Determination. DRC believes that parties in conflict are themselves the best creators of durable solutions to their own conflicts.
  • Accessibility. DRC observes policies and practices to ensure that inability to pay does not block access to DRC services, and to reduce barriers to services in all ways possible.
  • Alternatives. DRC seeks to enlarge the pool of options in conflict situations, providing positive alternatives to denying conflict, litigation, or resorting to adversarial positions or violence.

[edit] Activities

The Dispute Resolution Center provides trained conciliators and mediators who act as neutral third parties to help people resolve disputes. As neutral third parties, DRC doesn't impose settlements on parties, and doesn’t take sides. Instead, DRC guides people through the process of resolving their dispute and finding a solution that works for everyone involved.

  • Telephone Conciliation. DRC provides information, problem solving, and referrals. DRC can also act as a neutral, impartial go-between and help you and the person or persons you have a dispute with find a mutually acceptable solution.
  • Mediation. Professionally trained volunteer mediators meet with you and the other party at a neutral location. The mediator helps you to communicate your needs and concerns, to create mutually acceptable solutions, and to write up any agreements that you make.
  • Small Claims Court Mediation. DRC provides mediators at the courthouse. If you and the other party are both willing, you can meet with a mediator and try to resolve your dispute. If you aren't able to reach agreement, the judge will still hear your case.

DRC works on almost any type of civil dispute in which all the parties are willing to negotiate in good faith. Among the types of disputes we handle are:

  • Landlord-tenant disputes
  • Disputes between merchants and consumers
  • Neighborhood disputes
  • Disputes related to money, personal property, and real estate
  • Workplace disputes
  • Family disputes, including parenting plans
  • School problems
