“The goal of MSCMC is to empower Mid Shore residents to improve the environment in their communities by providing quality, confidential, convenient conflict resolution services at no cost. We invite you to join this effort by recommending our service to clients and friends, by volunteering yourself, or by donating whatever you can to help fund this valuable service”.

[edit] Origin & Activities

“Mid Shore Community Mediation Center (MSCMC) began operation in April 2005 with ten volunteer mediators and a full time director. MSCMC trained nine more mediators in June 2005. In July a part-time administrative assistant was hired.

MSCMC received its 501 (c) 3 non-profit status in September 2005. Presently we have a membership of 42 stakeholders and friends (over 30 of whom are trained community mediators). MSCMC also partners with the Maryland Commission on Human Relations (MCHR) by mediating racial, gender, sexual harassment, housing, and disability discrimination cases referred to us by the Commission.

The work of community mediation on the Mid Shore has only just begun. MSCMC has made a significant investment in human and financial resources to build momentum and promote mediation services on the Mid Shore. By the end of its first year of operation MSCMC accomplished a record number of mediations compared with other centers statewide. This success can be attributed to several factors: first, the need for mediation in the Mid Shore region; second, the energy and enthusiasm of the trained volunteers who make up the heart and soul of the organization, and third, the presence of a full-time paid director. MSCMC will be working toward establishing partnerships with a variety of referral sources. Examples of this are: social services, family support centers, schools, hospitals, police and sheriff’s departments and business organizations like the Chamber of Commerce.

Though some are aware of our presence, informing the public of where and when our services apply is a huge challenge. MSCMC continues to receive significant press coverage in the Star Democrat, local cable access TV, and through an advertising campaign on local public radio. MSCMC promotes its services at major events in Caroline, Dorchester and Talbot counties. MSCMC has (June 2006) completed a pilot Middle School Mediation.

Initiative at the Talbot County Alternative Learning Center: The fruits of that effort, a video tape depicting a conflict between a teenager and his parents and the mediation that resolves it, written, scripted and acted by the students at the alternative school is now available.

MSCMC held its second basic mediation training over the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th weekends of September 2006. At that time we trained 7 new adult mediators and 7 teen mediators who represent the diversity of the Mid Shore Region”.

[edit] Volunteering and Training

“Anyone is welcome to volunteer to help in the office, in the area of outreach and public education or with donations both monetary and in-kind.

Selected community members may be trained as community mediators. MSCMC is committed to training mediators that reflect the diversity of the community with respect to age, race, gender, ethnicity, income and education.

A successful candidate must complete the following requirements:

  • Community Mediation Maryland 45-hour basic mediation training (no charge, usually scheduled within 6 months of application);
  • Observe 2 complete mediations;
  • Mediate 2 complete mediations as a mediator trainee working with a lead mediator;
  • Complete a 5 hour Community Mediation Maryland follow-up training;
  • Participate in a 2-hour Strategic Feedback Session with co-mediators and center staff”.
